Academics
First and foremost, I used to have a love hate relationship with academics before I enter university. I'm pretty much a lazy person. Like most of the students in Singapore, I don't like to sit in a classroom and listen to a lecture for long hours, I hate writing essays and I like to play a lot of MMORPGs, but despite all these traits, I do love learning new things. I love mathematics, I like how economics can be such a wonderful amalgamation of disciplines, ranging from mathematics, statistics and environmental science to pyschology, sociology and anthropology. I also have interests in computer sciences, architecture and graphic designing, albeit my lack of artistic talent.
For those of you who are less patient, you can skip my rambling and scroll to the next section for module reviews. I've scrap the idea of creating a forum because the skin looks kinda ugly, so you can reach me by commenting on any of my blogposts or send me an email via the Contact page!
So, it took me a long time to decide what I really want to do in life, and from there deduce my most suited bachelor programme. So my initial shortlisted fields of study look like this:
1. Finance
2. Economics
3. Mathematics
4. Biochemistry
5. Psychology
6. Architecture
7. Computer Science
It's not that short isn't it? Not to mention the diversity in the list. Medicine was never on the list, I'm not that much of a blood and gore person, not even for the money. Don't get me wrong, I respect doctors. I just can't be one. I was interested in Law for a while, until I saw the necessary texts, like I said, I was a lazy bum. Computer Science is interesting, but I fear my lack of foundation will make university life miserable-grade. Pardon my bad pun. Architecture is discarded next due to my obvious lack of talent in drawing. Psychology and Biology? Sounds heavy but I can decide on that later. So condensing into faculties, it's shortlisted to:
1. NUS/NTU/SMU Business School
2. NUS Faculty of Arts & Social Science/NTU School of Humanities & Social Science/SMU Economics
3. NUS Faculty of Science/NTU School of Physical & Mathematical Science
I don't remember what I put for other choices back then, but anything out of the top 3 choices doesn't really matter, and I only put 2 choices for SMU. I was offered, in chronological order: SMU Business Management (1st choice), NUS FASS (2nd choice), NTU Combined Degree in Mathematics and Economics (1st choice). By that time, what I have in mind was economics or mathematics, business(read: finance) didn't seem that appealing anymore. For geographical reasons, I chose FASS, and ended up where I am today. Despite the extreme competitiveness in NUS, I didn't regret my choice so far, and hopefully not in the future. Now, back to the present, we shall talk more about the courses that I have taken in NUS in the next section.
